But after Katich fell for and Hussey departed 10 short of his second century of the tour, they were bundled out for to hand the momentum back to India. Krejza grabbed four second-innings scalps to collect the second-best match figures by an Australian on Test debut, but new skipper MS Dhoni and fellow offie Harbhajan Singh posted rearguard half-centuries to set Australia to win.

The target always looked out of reach as India regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the same city they squandered the silverware in four years earlier. It didn't have nearly as much excitement as four years earlier, but the Ashes campaign again came down to a decider at The Oval. After England had held on for a draw in the first Test, which was almost as valuable as a win given Australia's dominance of the match, the hosts recorded a crushing victory in the second Test before Australia followed the drawn third Test with a comprehensive win of their own to level the series.

The Ashes all but returned to England on day two in London when Stuart Broad destroyed Australia's batting order, taking as the tourists were bowled out for just to concede a run first-innings deficit. A century on Test debut from Jonathan Trott then helped set the Aussies an improbable victory target of and, despite a fighting century from Michael Hussey, England triumphed by runs to reclaim the Ashes.

Despite having the better of the opening two Tests, Australia headed to Perth for the series decider with the series locked at nil-all and the world number-one ranking on the line. Supreme double centuries from skipper Michael Clarke in each of the first two Tests wasn't enough for the hosts, with debutant Faf du Plessis producing a memorable performance in the second Test in Adelaide to ensure the series was deadlocked when both teams headed west. As if the Aussies needed any extra motivation, Ricky Ponting's announcement that it would be his final Test match sure provided it.

Australia's brave bowling effort in Adelaide led to a revamped attack, but the inexperienced side were on top when they skittled the hosts for just on the opening day. A fiery spell of bowling from Dale Steyn meant the hosts managed just in reply and blistering centuries from Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers put the match beyond reach.

Australia fell more than runs short in their final innings, meaning Ponting's farewell ended with the Proteas celebrating the world number-one ranking. A comprehensive win to each side in the opening two Tests meant the three-match series was locked at 1-all when the number-one ranking went on the line once again in the decider. Superb centuries to Shaun Marsh and Steve Smith as well as another incredible bowling display by Mitchell Johnson in the first Test gave the Aussies a series lead, but the Proteas responded with a run win in Port Elizabeth, built on centuries from JP Duminy and AB de Villiers and then a memorable spell from Dale Steyn on the final day.

A pair of blistering centuries from David Warner and a courageous no from skipper Michael Clarke helped give Australia the ascendency, but the Proteas successfully stonewalled for much of the final day to put them on course for a grinding draw. That outcome seemed the most likely when Australia needed two wickets with just 15 minutes left to play, before Ryan Harris stole the match and the series with a memorable over to set off wild celebrations.

With his injured knee screaming at him to give in, Harris bowled Steyn and Morne Morkel in the space of three balls to ensure a remarkable series had a fitting conclusion. And given how memorable the below matches are, the fourth Test this weekend should be a beauty. Australia Men Australia v India Tests.
